1. Democracy and Governance Women Leader Elected a Councilor by
Iheaka D & G Women.
The 100 women D&G groups condemn thuggery and election rigging in Nigerian politics. Recently, a D&G woman leader Beatrice Eze won election as the Councilor in their ward Iheaka Community in Enugu State.
In preparation for the April 2007 election, the D&G women nominated a woman leader in the person of Beatrice Ezeh for her capability in leadership and her efforts towards their community development using women as agent of change. During the campaign (because women are fed up of male dominated positions in politics) and when the men in their community heard about the nomination of a woman, they became confused and agitated because they were sure that women will vote her since they are united and are in majority. Therefore, they ran helter skelter and started plans on how to rig the election. On the election day, all the women came out en masse and after voting, they waited for the number of voters to be counted bu surprisingly, the thugs came with guns and scared people away and ran out with the voters box. In solidarity, the entire women D&G in this community assembled together and marched to the Local Government Secretariat demanding that unless the election is repeated and votes counted there will be no peace in that area. Eventually, they realized that there was nothing they could do than obey the women. The election process was repeated and the D&G leader Beatrice was pronounced the winner as the Councilor for her ward because of the massive vote she received from the D&G women and the majority of the community members.
