CASE STORY NO 6 By Imilike-Etiti D&G women in Udenu LGA
By Theresa Ugwu – the Mobilizer of Imilike-Etiti Community
On 15th June 2007, when we were having our central body meeting (100 women), a man named Chidozie Ugwueze-Ugwu brought a report to us saying that Nicholas Ogbodo accused him of dropping charm in his land. He then told us that Nicholas has reported the case to the youths and the youths asked Chidozie and Nicholas to bring the sum of twenty-eight thousand naira each (N28,000) for further investigation about the case. The man Chidozie told the women that he had not such money requested by the youths but because the D&G women sometimes work with the youths we supported them and demanded that the amount be provided for further investigation even if it is rent payment to show commitment on the case. Nicholas provided the money even though the D&G women did not take bribe, they kept it aside hoping to return it when the case is ended and both the youths with the women’s support started the investigation. As time goes, Chidozie was being dragged to provide his own money but he refused and ran away from the village indicating that he is guilty of the offence by running away from the village without anybody chasing him. Chidozie has been a suspect all along and he did not want any investigation, even when the youths dropped the mater the women insisted that the truth must come out so that such act does not continue in our community, D&G women with the support of the entire village excommunicated Chigozie with his family members until he confesses, after a month he sent a letter to D&G women asking them to bet the villages to allow him and his family back while saying that he actually placed the charm but will never do such again.
Finally, the D&G women penalized him and asked him to pay a fine of N20,000 to Nicholas and ask for forgiveness; which he complied. The D and G women command so much respect in our community.
