ADULT LITERACY PROGRAMME FOR ADULT WOMEN

DEC BASIC LITERACY PROGRAMME FOR ADULT WOMEN.
In our continued effort to reduce, the rate of illiteracy and ignorance among majority of women resident in the rural communities, DEC in her literacy programme for adult women has continued to support literacy classes in more than 20 communities, through training and re-training of literacy workers, provision of teaching materials, grant to beneficiaries of post literacy programme and extensive monitoring of adult literacy classes in DEC operational communities.

CAPACITY BUILDING & HUMAN RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT.

The unit carried out a 3-days literacy workshop/training and retraining for 40 old and 40 new literacy workers in August and November 2008 respectively.
During this training, the new literacy workers were trained on methods of organizing literacy classes in the community, as well as sensitizing them on the need for basic Education for all in the society.
Other interesting topics at the workshop were: - Building high Esteem among adult literacy participants.

  1. How to access performance of literacy workers as well as participants and how to sustain adult literacy programme through collaborative efforts of organizers, the community and participants.
  2. Practicals on how to make pomade and detergents in order to attract more illiterates to the class.

At the end of the  training, the old literacy workers were urged to return to their respective communities and impart  the knowledge, which they acquired, to the literacy learners while new workers (instructors) were required to start literacy classes and make it functional, using the guideline given to them by the DEC’ consultant for this programme.
The new literacy workers were given the DEC literacy curriculum and textbooks to enable them follow the course outline for the programme.
Old literacy workers were equipped with more skills and materials to enable them carryout practicals of making soap, pomade and confectionaries for the adult learners and to enhance the learning skills of participants in the new trade
GRANT TO POST LITERACY CANDIDATES JOINING THE JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL SCHEME.
During this period, 25 candidates who were ex-participants in DEC literacy classes from five Rural communities benefited in a grant meant for their school fees, uniform and textbooks in Junior Secondary classes where they have been enrolled in their communities
During this period, the Programme officer carried out a monitoring exercise in 20 old classes to ensure that all the literacy activities and their curriculum are being followed strictly by the literacy workers. A total of 300 adult learners were recorded as present during the monitoring exercise. Textbooks and workbooks were presented to the best students in each class to encourage their commitment to their studies.
Recently, DEC supported 2 adult classes with writing desks and this have created a positive impact among the benefiting classes and their instructors who had before now complained of lack of writing desks in their classrooms.
Furthermore, the beneficiaries of the grant for adult women from DEC literacy classes now in the Junior Secondary Schools have since started classes. The grant was for their school fees, uniforms, and textbooks among other school requirements (See photos attached in the appendix)
During the monitoring exercise by the programme officer observed a lot of positive changes in their status.
