CASE STORY FROM UNIQUE STAR DEC YOUTH ASSOCIATION
In the year 2006, I started feeling fever and body pain. I went to buy medicine from the chemist. After taking the medicine the fever continued, and I went to a General hospital for treatment, The doctor and prescribed drugs, but the sickness degenerated. By this time both cough and skin problem started to manifest. When I consulted the doctor again I was asked to go for a laboratory test. After the test I was told that I had Tuberculosis and Malaria parasite, so they started giving me Tuberculosis and malaria treatment. As I was taking the treatment those symptoms subsided, but after a while they appeared and became worse. I continued to receive the treatment till the beginning of 2008; but instead of getting better my condition became worse. I had to abandon the orthodox medicine and went to a native doctor. Before this time my husband started to feel the same sickness. Both of us went to the native doctor, and he promised that he will cure us. After the monetary arrangements, he started giving us native medicine, which we took for over six months, but our conditions worsened.
In the last quarter of 2008, we had to go back to orthodox medicine. We consulted another medical doctor and after a series of tests the doctor recommended another treatment that lasted for four months. Within this time our health improved, but immediately we stopped treatment, the sickness re-surfaced. During the time DEC ENUGU HIV/AIDS was launched in my community. After the launching, the youth mobilizer, who happens to reside in our own part of the community, saw me and asked me about my health. After hearing from me,
she volunteered to take me to DEC headquarters at Enugu. Initially my husband refused to go, but I went with the DEC mobilizer to DEC headquarter at Enugu. I was introduced to the programme officer in charge of HIV/AIDS Awareness Campaign, who gave us a written note and after took me to 82 Division Hospital (IDC unit) for a confirmation test. After they conducted laboratory tests they confirmed I was HIV positive. They said that before giving me any treatment, I had to bring my husband. I returned home and told my husband, and he followed me to the hospital where the same test was conducted on him, he also tested HIV positive. They gave us treatment, and our health improved automatically. Everybody around was surprised and all the treatment we received were free. I thank God for this benevolence shown to us by DEC ENUGU through our community youth mobilizer, I pray that almighty God will continue to bless the entire youth Association on HIV/AIDS programme, bless DEC ENUGU for this wonderful love and care they showed to me and my family. Right now I could say that I am Ok because initially I was weighing 7kg but now I weigh 38kg; and to God’s glory I ve delivered a baby who is HIV negative. I will continue to live positively. To God be the Glory.
