EDITORIAL VIEW

It has been eight years since DEC Newsletter’s maiden edition. How time flies. We are here again, ready for hard work and challenges ahead. We have come a long way, all thanks to God Almighty, who gave us the strength.

The centre has continued to find remedies to enforce the dignity of womanhood, so that women can contribute to positive transformation in our societies.
Over the years DEC was involved in Women Education and Empowerment through Human Rights, Health, Literacy, Community Development, and Skills Acquisition, using our 100 women in solidarity through Critical Mass Approach to making positive changes in their communities. Since the introduction and implementation of its Micro-Credit Scheme women have stormed the Labour Market, and embraced all kinds of income-generating trades to secure better living. This Microfinance Services have gone a long way towards alleviating poverty in the lives of poor women in the Igbo-speaking states of Nigeria. These women have recorded positive changes in their lives, families, and communities.

In our Democracy and Governance programme, women still face discrimination. This has affected them negatively both socially, economically, and culturally. Despite these challenges our 100 women pressure groups, using non-violent activities have recorded positive impact in the rural communities where DEC operates.

In this edition, you will be inspired through life stories on the impact of DEC Community Health Work and HIV/AIDS Awareness programme. For those of you who think that with the contamination of HIV/AIDS virus there is no hope for fulfilled life, check out the testimonies inside and y ou will believe in miracles.

In Our Adult literacy Programme, results have shown that old people can also go to school and become important personalities. There are positive responses from the out of school female youths and underprivileged who benefitted from DEC Skills Acquisition Programme for unemployed out-of-school female youth.

We commend the efforts of other NGOs who work tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of the poor (women in particular).

In the light of the foregoing, you are therefore invited to digest the interesting stories in this edition, hoping that we will continue to bring you further fulfilling content of our activities.

Have a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Ifeoma Okechukwu.
