CASE STORY
I am Mrs Josehpine Willy-Omeje, a mother of three and I live with my husband at Umuagungwu in Ibeku quarters, Opi Community in Nsukka Local government Area of Enugu State. Today, I am proud to call myself a commercial farmer in poultry and a supplier of day old chicks and grown chicken to big restaurant and hotels around Nsukka and Enugu towns. The story of my poultry farming started early in life when l was first married. I got the basic training from a friend and relative on how to breed and manage day old chicks. After this basic training l started trying my hand with little number of day old chicks due to financial constraints. My doors opened in the year 2006 when l got the illuminating touch of DEC Enugu. I started poultry business with four chicks in year 2000 and could not go beyond buying only 10 chicks but with the contact l had with Development Education Centre, Enugu later in year 2006 there was lots of positive changes in my life. I came to know about DEC Enugu in 2006 when the entire women of Opi Community was admitted as a functional Community Based Organisation (CBO) working with DEC under her 100 Women.

Democracy and Governance Project (popularly known as D&G). It is the micro credit programme of DEC that gave me the opportunity to develop my poultry business to a large scale now. I am now at my third loan cycle, where I can boast of investing and managing not less that N400,000 as a personal business, supported by my family. Currently our farm has 250 day old chicks, and 156 mature chicken and 25 turkeys. From the profits made from this poultry farm, I have learnt how to produce feeds and l now sell poultry feeds at Afor Opi Market. I have gone further to purchase a palm kernel cracking machine and also employed an assistant whom I now pay from the proceeds.

I built a big water storage tank that store water all year round for my poultry business.
My future plan is to purchase a bus to be used in supplying chickens to eating houses and hotels in town as well as poultry feeds to customer.
I remain grateful to DEC Enugu for making my dream come through. Long live DEC Enugu Micro Credit Institution.
Finally l call on every woman in the rural and urban area to take the opportunity being offered by DEC as l have done and make a difference in your life and that of our society. God bless DEC Enugu
