The development education centre (DEC) Enugu had recently
inaugurated two new community-based women organizations in
Imilike Etiti in Udenu local Government Area and Okpaligbo
Ogu in Nsukka Local government area all in Enugu State of
Nigeria, over 2000 members of these two organizations participated
in the ceremony, which took place at different occasions.
At her speech during the inauguration ceremony the Executive
Director of DEC Enugu Cecilia Asogwa assured them of the commitment
of the centre to bring about justice, peace and development
among majority of people in the rural communities especially
women.
Chief Asogwa encouraged women to participated actively in
building a more sustainable society where women will be self-actualized
and recognized as important persons in their community. She
further stated that in Nigeria today, women are being called
upon to take more active part in politicies so as to participate
and contribute actively in governance from the ward to the
national levels.
The Executive Director maintained that Nigeria women are in
the majority and can influence who gets elected in any democratic
dispensation. She however noted that many women are interested
and willing to participate in politics and good governance
of this country, only if the thuggery, minized. Chief Asogwa
therefore appealed to the women to be more human rights, abolition
of obnoxious cultural practices, HIV?AIDS advocacy campaign
and other awareness building programme, stressing that DEC
will support them economically, socially and politically to
succeed.
The event featured traditional rulers who were in attendance.
The highlights of the occasion was the usual welcome of DEC
team with a-21 gun salute by the community elders.
In the past 18 years, development Education Centre has intensified
her people oriented development programme of working with
majority of women who live in the rural areas in the South
Eastern states of the country. This is done through her well
organized programmes with interested stakeholders mostly community
based women organizations and self help groups.
