Mrs Theresa Attamah is a member of Chioma women self help
association Orba in Udenu local government area of Enugu State.
The group joined DEC activity and programmes in 1998 and ever
since then her women have been part of DEC activities. Mrs.
Theresa Attamah who was one of the women that were working
with DEC engages in yellow pepper production and rearing of
10 birds. The area of land which Mrs. Theresa plant pepper
is five plots.
At the time of DEC intervention, the five plots produces 6
bags of yellow pepper and this worth about N15,000. Mrs Theresa
Attamah embraced this project with every sense of commitment
and hard work. But due to the fact that the yellow pepper
requires manure and constant water supply, the efforts of
Mrs. Attamah did not yield much result as she lacks the capital
to buy manure, which barrow watering vessels and pay labourers.
However, after three years of working hard to change this
situation, and to no avail, she applied through her group
to DEC microenterprise scheme for loan assistance. DEC approved
her application for fund and assisted her with the sum of
N30,000 loan of 10% interest per annum to enable her boost
and diversify her project. This assistance helped Mrs. Attamah
Theresa to increase her birds, added 10 turkey, placed an
order and bought 16 bags of poultry manure for her pepper
farm, she has also increased the plot of land from 3 to 6
plots and plants pumpk in addition to the pepper.
The result of all these commitments are:
• Increased pepper production from 6 bags – 10
bags which worth N30,000 every month.
• Prepares the pepper from nursery stage to harvesting
stage.
• Gets part of the poultry manure from her poultry farm.
• Has also an underground tank of 1000 gallons of water
to have steady water supply for her project. This increase
in income has made Mrs. Theresa Attamah to send her son to
where he is learning how to sell motor spare parts, while
other women in the community now come to Mrs. Attamah to teach
them how to be successful in the yellow pepper production.
Mrs. Theresa Attamah has remained grateful to DEC or their
support.
