AN INTERVIEW WITH A BENEFICIARY OF DEC’ D&G AND EMPOWERNMENT
PROGRAMME
Martha Madu from Nneamaka Ohom Orba WSHA in an interview with
the mobilizer of thee Chioma WSHA Orba, (one of DEC’ assisted
CBOs) while narrating her experience since she joined the Democracy
and Governance programme (D&G) of DEC, Enugu, stated that what
attracted her to be a participant in his programme is because D&G
project of DEC empowers women both materially and in the mind.
Martha told the mobilize during the interview that her husband married
a second wife and wanted to send her packing, in year 2001 even
though she committed no crime.
This is the major reason that made her to join D&G group and
immediately bought their uniform in order to wear it whenever the
group is having their meeting or rallies in the community.
She said that she paraded herself in the uniform wherever her husband
and the second wife will see her “singing” to enable
them understand that she is the first wife and no one will take
her right in the family as long as she is a member of D&G programme
in Orba community and they know that due to what they see in Orba
already as evidence of G&G activity.
Mrs Madu now enjoys her husband economic trees freely without fear
of any kind. She is now self-assertive, self confidence and empowered.
She said “ I will never forget DEC and D&G women in my
life time because they made me to know my right as a woman, and
demand it. In strengthening my effort I have enrolled in the adult
education class in my village. I am now convinced that no age is
too old to learn.
She now attend adult evening secondary school “Ave made secondary
school” at Ajuona in her community and is’ now graduating
as a junior secondary school 1 student.
Martha expressed her joy in schooling during the interview and said
that she is proud to move about in her school uniform.
